Free Dental Checks
Our veterinary nurses offer free dental checks, allowing us to assess your pet’s mouth and identify signs of dental disease before they progress. These checks are a great first step in determining whether further dental treatment may be needed.
Why Dental Care Is So Important
Dental disease often occurs below the gum line, where it cannot be seen during a routine examination. Left untreated, it can lead to chronic pain, infection and damage to internal organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. Pets are very good at hiding dental pain, so regular checks are essential.
Our Staged Dentistry Approach
At Sorell Veterinary Centre, we use a staged dentistry process designed to prioritise safety, accuracy and comfort.
Stage One involves a short general anaesthetic and includes:
- A full oral assessment under anaesthesia
- Dental X-rays (performed as part of every dental procedure)
- Pre-anaesthetic blood testing (completed for every patient)
- Ultrasonic scale and polish
Once the mouth has been thoroughly assessed, we can accurately determine the level of dental disease and discuss any further treatment required.
Stage Two, if needed, is scheduled 2 – 4 weeks later and focuses on extractions or advanced dental treatment identified during the first stage.
This planned, two-stage approach means two shorter anaesthetics, which is often safer and less stressful than one long procedure.
Advanced Dental Equipment & Aftercare
We use modern ultrasonic scaling equipment and dental radiology to ensure no disease is missed. Following treatment, we provide personalised home care advice and dental products to help maintain your pet’s oral health for as long as possible.
